03/01/2008 - Vonage and Nortel settle patent dispute
The settlement involves a limited cross licensing of three Nortel and three Vonage patents. The settlement will not include any monetary payments between them. Claims relating to past damages and the remaining patents will be dismissed.
"We are pleased to resolve this issue and enter into a productive relationship with Nortel," said Sharon O'Leary, chief legal officer at Vonage.
In August 2007, Vonage sued Nortel's US unit seeking to invalidate the three patents. In response, Nortel said Vonage had infringed those patents and nine others. Nortel sought an order blocking Vonage's use of technology for directory assistance and emergency calls.
In December 2007, Vonage settled it patent dispute with AT&T by paying $39 million. Earlier, in October 2007, Vonage agreed to pay a total of $200 million to Sprint Nextel and Verizon Communications to settle their respective lawsuits.
