09/02/2007 - RR Donnelley considers 35 redundancies at its UK print site
RR Donnelley is looking to make 35 redundancies at its UK print site, in Yorkshire, after one of its presses was devastated by fire last November.
Management at the directory printer, whose best-known client is the Yellow Pages, are due to meet with union representatives next Tuesday to discuss the potential job losses.
Amicus branch officer for Yorkshire, Tyne and Humber Steve Hart said that the potential redundancies were a result of last November’s fire at Flaxby Moor.
Hart said: “The staff at Flaxby Moor are an excellent, highly-skilled workforce. For the press not to come back has had a devastating effect.”
RR Donnelley was unavailable for comment.
The fire caused severe damage to a two-tower Goss Universal 70 press.
Goss was called in to survey the damage caused by the fire, the cause of which was unknown.
It is so far unclear if the press will be replaced. It is one of a number of coldset presses at the plant, which employs 390 staff and is RR Donnelley’s only UK site.
The site opened in 2000 and specialises in printing directories for clients including Dutch Telecom and Yellow Pages.
News of the potential job losses at Flaxby Moor follows last month’s announcement that Benhamgoodhead Print’s Colchester site, another major directory printer, would close.
The closure plans were blamed on the loss of the contract to print BT’s The Phone Book last January. Around 90 jobs are expected to be lost.
